Eligibility Criteria

Are You Eligible for Flight Delay Compensation?

Under UK261/EU261, you may be entitled to compensation if all four conditions are met.

3+ Hour Arrival Delay

Your flight must have arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late. The clock stops when the aircraft doors open — not when you land.

UK/EU Flight Coverage

The flight must have departed from a UK or EU airport, OR been operated by a UK or EU airline arriving into the UK/EU.

Airline's Fault

The delay must not have been caused by extraordinary circumstances genuinely beyond the airline's control (e.g. severe weather, ATC strikes).

Within the Time Limit

In the UK you have 6 years to claim. In most EU countries the limit is 2–3 years. Claims from past flights are still valid — check now.

How much compensation are you owed?

Compensation is fixed by law based on flight distance — not ticket price.

Flight DistanceDelay RequiredExample RouteCompensation
Up to 1,500 km3+ hoursLondon → Paris£220 / €250
1,500 km – 3,500 km3+ hoursLondon → Athens£350 / €400
Over 3,500 km3–4 hoursLondon → New York£260 / €300
Over 3,500 km4+ hoursLondon → New York£520 / €600

Compensation is per person. If you travelled with family or friends, each passenger is entitled to the full amount. A family of four on a long-haul flight could claim up to £2,080 / €2,400.

The Airline's Excuse

"Extraordinary circumstances." Know when it applies.

Airlines cite this phrase to reject valid claims. Here's what actually qualifies — and what doesn't.

NOT Extraordinary — You Can Claim

The European Court of Justice ruled routine technical faults are not extraordinary circumstances. These delays entitle you to full compensation.

  • Technical faults and routine maintenance
  • Crew sickness or staff shortages
  • Airline staff strikes (pilots, cabin crew)
  • IT systems failure or operational issues
  • Fuelling delays or catering issues

GENUINELY Extraordinary

The airline must prove circumstances were beyond their control AND they took all reasonable measures. The burden of proof is on them.

  • Extreme weather (hurricane, volcanic ash)
  • Air traffic control strikes
  • Political instability or terrorism
  • Serious security threat at airport
  • Hidden manufacturing defects (rare)

We challenge every airline rejection. If they cited extraordinary circumstances, we review the case law. 70% of challenged rejections result in a successful payout.
